The On and Ons story so far

Brothers Glenn Morris (lead guitar/lead vocals/songwriter) and Brian Morris (drums/vocals) grew up in a musical family, with their big brother Johnny, a singer, guitarist and songwriter, and their brother-in-law Dennis Wilson - a virtuoso guitar master. It’s no surprise that they spent a lot of time singing together on songs by the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and many other artists of that time.

Early this century they had teamed up once again in Sydney covers band The Zeros, when they were selected by the self-proclaimed “King of Power Pop” Paul Collins to be his backing band The Beat for an Australian tour in 2012. During that tour, Paul heard some of Glenn’s original tunes and strongly suggested that he should get them recorded and put out an album. Prior to that Glenn had been regarded mainly as a guitar player and backing singer in bands like Kings of the Sun, with whom he did a US and European tour opening for KISS, and Aussie indie legends The Screaming Tribesmen.

Once back home the boys hunkered down with Dennis Wilson in his studio and recorded the first The On and Ons album, with Glenn or Dennis on bass duties, and Dennis producing. After the album had been recorded Glenn and Brian recruited former Hoodoo Gurus bassist Clyde Bramley, The Stems’ Richard Lane on organ and guitar, and Jon Roberts, ex-Barbarellas, also on guitar, to fill out the live band.

The band did its first gig in mid-2015 at the launch of the first album ‘It’s …The On and Ons Calling’ (now just referred to as ‘Calling’). Over the next 18 months the band played around Sydney and visited Melbourne, Brisbane, and Western Australia. Work then started on a second album eventually called ‘Welcome Aboard’.

Richard Lane lived in Fremantle, near Perth, Western Australia, 5000kms away from the rest of the band in Sydney, and it became apparent that it wasn’t sustainable to keep flying him over for gigs, so reluctantly the band and Richard went their seperate ways. Richard plays on 3 songs on ‘Welcome Aboard’ and remained a close friend of the band but tragically passed away in 2021. He is very much missed!

‘Welcome Aboard’ was released in 2017, and also includes guest appearances from Murray “the red Wiggle” Cook on Fender 12-string, Peter Head (organ), Anique Edye (vocals), and Dennis Wilson (acoustic guitar). The album was produced and recorded by Clyde and Glenn, and mixed and mastered by Dennis Wilson.

Shortly after ‘Welcome Aboard’ was released rhythm guitarist Jon Roberts decided to leave the band due to conflicting work commitments although he still remains close to the band. After toying with the idea of getting a replacement guitarist, but finding no-one suitable, the band decided to continue as a three-piece power trio.

Recording re-commenced and a six-track mini-album, once again produced by Clyde and Glenn, and mixed and mastered by Dennis, ‘Menacing Smile’ was released in 2020 just as the first Covid lock-down started, which meant there were very few opportunities for gigs to promote it. During breaks in further Covid lockdowns the band recorded their fourth release ‘Back For More’(2021). Once again produced by Clyde and Glenn, mixed by Clyde, and mastered by Dennis.

All The On and Ons releases have garnered good responses from the Power Pop community, and received generous airplay/podcast-play around the world from that community, including from influential broadcasters like Rodney Bingenheimer and Little Steven Van Zandt.

The On and Ons latest album ‘Let Ya Hair Down!’ (2023) was recorded as the world was coming out of Covid lockdowns, and was produced by Clyde and Glenn, mixed by Richard Ball at Sugarplum Studios, and mastered by the legendary Don Bartley at Benchmark Mastering.

“Little Steven” Van Zandt chose the title track ‘Let Ya Hair Down!’ to be the “Coolest Song In The World” in his Little Steven’s Underground Garage on SiriusXM for the week 5-11 June 2023. In the end of year “Coolest Song In The World 2023” poll, fans voted the song into the #9 spot! A proud moment for the band!

Since the album was recorded The On and Ons have been joined by keyboard player John Hoey from Died Pretty, to help fill out the live sound. John’s first appearance on record with The On and Ons will be on the April 2024 7” single release featuring the songs ‘Hey What’s Going On?’ & ‘Looking Out Of a Mirror’ on French label Rogue Records (Disques Rogue). http://roguerecords.bandcamp.com

In July 2024, the band were thrilled to sign a release agreement with US label Jem Records, home of the best current Power Pop practitioners including the aforementioned Paul Collins. A new album is underway and preview tracks will be released shortly.

The first releases for Jem Records (Sept ’24) are the digital singles ‘Long Ride’ & ‘Sunny Jim’ to be closely followed for Halloween by ‘(Scare Me) Outta My Mind’ which was recorded at the request of Peter Zaremba (The Fleshtones) for his Little Steven’s Underground Garage radio show “Fright Nite with Count Zaremba”. The album ‘Come On In’ will follow in January with three brand new tracks plus a selection of the band’s fave tunes so far remastered by Don Bartley, and a full album of new material later in 2025.
